New digital terrestrial, when does it arrive? From 20 December the switch-off will be Rai's turn, here's what to know

There are a handful of days left until the transition to new digital terrestrial for TV: Wednesday 21 December 2022 all national and local television networks will only be visible if you have the new devices capable of supporting theHigh Definition (HD). As explained by Ministry of Economy, from December 20 the switch off it will be up to Rai and all the broadcasters left with the DVB-T2 (ie second generation terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting), the channels relegated from number 500 onwards are essentially switched off. The final passage with the entry into the new phase and with the definitive transition having taken place will be foreseen for January 2023: on December 31, 2022, television will switch to the new DVB-T2 standard. This means that after this date, all non-approved televisions will definitively stop transmitting. Many, too many technical terms. But how it works the new digital terrestrial? And what must be done to continue to see all the channels?

New Digital Terrestrial: what changes?

This step was necessary to make room for new generation mobile transmissions, the 5G technologies. It is a more efficient system that will allow the same amount of data to be transmitted (therefore we are not talking about content) despite the reduction in frequencies. The coding MPEG4 it saves bandwidth compared to MPEG2 encoding. In a nutshell: it allows for less electromagnetic pollution and allows you to transmit with better video and audio quality.

How to know if you are ready for the new digital terrestrial?

To find out if your own television o decoder is compatible and capable of supporting high definition, you can immediately make a test: just go to channels 100 or 200. If the writing "Test HeVC Main 10" appears in at least one of these, it means that you are ready to switch.

Otherwise, you can try re-tuning the TV, but it is very likely that the TV has already done this by itself. In case of doubts, the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy has made two tools available: call the call center (Monday to Friday from 9 to 18 on 06 87 800 262) or ask for help via Whatsapp (on 340 1206348).
