The winter has decided to raise its voice. After weeks of milder temperatures and scattered rains, Italy is preparing to face a thrilling weekend. 2025 begins with acold wave which will test the resistance of Italians to frost. The forecasts for Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 January 2025 speak clearly: Arctic Incursion, low-altitude snow (with possible flakes even in Rome on Monday), strong winds and plummeting temperatures. But let's see what awaits us.
Temperatures plummet: the cold arrives from the east
A change is taking place in European weather, with thewinter knocking heavily at the doorsThe ocean currents that have accompanied us in recent days are giving way to an irruption of cold air coming from the Great NorthCold currents, driven by a powerful block of Arctic air, will begin to slide over the Mediterranean, headed towards the Balkans and Italy. This move will bring the more intense cold and a radical change in weather conditions, with widespread rain and snow. In other words, prepare for a real climate “whiplash”.
Il drop in temperatures will be the main feature of the weekend. The maximum temperatures will undergo a drastic drop, with a negative peak that will be recorded on Sunday, when a drop of over 10 degrees compared to the previous values is expected. Along the Adriatic side, temperatures will drop significantly, and the feeling of cold will be accentuated by strong northern winds. The South, unfortunately, will not be spared, with snowfall that will fall to very low altitudes even in the hills, creating inconvenience in several regions.
Bad weather in the south, high pressure in the north
Un cyclonic vortex is forming on the Tyrrhenian Sea, intensifying the bad weather in the Center-South, where there will be heavy rain, strong winds and snowfall in the mountainous areas. The North, however, will remain protected from thehigh pressure which will guarantee clear skies, but with temperatures plummeting. The heaviest snowfall will be concentrated on the Apennine reliefs, with significant accumulations, especially between Saturday evening and Sunday. Temperatures in the North will drop by a few degrees, with minimum values that will touch -5°C in some areas of the Po Valley.
For the weekend, a Yellow alert for thunderstorms and strong winds, especially in Lazio and part of the Center-South. Bad weather conditions will be particularly intense between Saturday and Sunday, with disruption to outdoor activities. It is advisable to constantly monitor the weather forecast and take precautions, especially for those traveling on mountain roads, where the risk of snow and ice is high.
Saturday 11th January: Bad weather arrives
Il cold will make its presence felt already from Saturday morning, when the skies will clear quickly in the North, with large areas of clear skies and clear, but cold air. In the central regions, especially in Tuscany and in the northern areas of Umbria and Marche, the weather will remain partly cloudy, but temperatures will start to drop significantly. Isolated rain and showers will affect Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise and Campania, and then intensify in the afternoon, with thunderstorms that will wet much of the South. In the evening, the heavier rainfall will hit Campania, Molise and Sicily in particular, while snow will start to fall on the Apennine mountains, with flakes falling down to 700-1000 metres above sea level.
Sunday, January 12: Low-level snow and freezing winds
Sunday the cold will continue to rage. To the North part, the sky will be clear and the sun will shine, but don't be fooled: temperatures will remain cold, with the thermometer dropping below zero during the night and in the morning. Centro, the weather will be more variable, with some rain and snowfall at low altitudes that will affect the central Apennines, also bringing significant accumulations. But the real show will be experienced at South: in Campania, Molise and Calabria, the snow will reach up to 200-400 meters, while Sicily will see flakes fall to higher altitudes. The heavy rain and strong winds, which will blow up to gale force, will make the bad weather even more biting.
