Mario Monti and Mariano Rajoy sent a letter to the President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych, in which they hope, asking for a strengthening of the rule of law, for a positive solution to the judicial case of theformer Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko and announce that they have asked to meet her.
The request for a visit concerns the ambassadors in Kiev of Italy and Spain and not the two premiers Mario Monti and Mariano Rajoy. This is what government sources specify regarding the letter that the two leaders intend to send to the Ukrainian president Yanukovych.
In the letter, the leaders of Italy and Spain, as reported by European diplomatic circles, thank the Ukrainian people for the warm welcome given to the national football teams. At the same time, they wish to take this opportunity to convey the continued support of both Italy and Spain for Ukraine's European aspirations, expressing the expectation of a positive resolution of the court cases of former Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko and other members of the previous Government, as requested by the international community. Hence the announcement that they had asked their respective ambassadors in Kiev to request permits to visit Ms. Timoshenko, trusting that these visits could soon take place.
