New step forward for Turin in the field of district heating. Thanks to the new cogeneration plant, inaugurated yesterday in the northern area of the city, another 150 thousand inhabitants will be able to use the service, thus bringing the number to 550 thousand people, equal to 55% of the population.
The plant was built by Iren Energia and has an electrical power of 400 MW and 220 thermal MW, useful for feeding a volume of 18 million cubic metres. The heat will be distributed through a system of underground networks that will be 120 kilometers long. The double pipes that transport and distribute heat will be 450 km long and will serve a volume of 55 million cubic metres.
Thanks to this operation, it will be possible to eliminate hundreds of condominium boilers and reduce atmospheric emissions by 134 tons/year of nitrogen oxides, 400 tons/year of sulfur oxides and 17 tons/year of dust. We must then add the 95 tons/year of oil equivalent (Toe) that will not be burned, which add up to the current 180 Toe that are already saved with the Moncalieri cogeneration plant.
