Now it's official: François Hollande will not run again for the presidency of the French Republic. It is the first time that this has happened in the history of France in the so-called Fifth Republic, i.e. from the 50s to today: in this period of time all the presidents had run again and in several cases had also been re-elected (De Gaulle, Mittérrand, Chirac ), with the exception of Georges Pompidou who died during his first mandate, in 1974.
The outgoing president therefore took note of a popularity at an all-time low: "I will not run for the renewal of my mandate," said Hollande, elected in 2012 when he defeated the then outgoing president Nicolas Sarkozy. The leader of the socialist party leaves room for his prime minister Manuel Valls, who will therefore run as a favorite for the centre-left primaries, and for Economy Minister Emmanuel Macron, who has founded his own liberal movement and could be the outsider in the race for 'Elisha in the spring of 2017.
