In the early afternoon, the Labor Department announced that inflation in the United States saw a monthly increase of 0,2% in May against the expected 0,1%. In the previous month there had been a growth in consumer prices of 0,4% and forecasts were downward.
Even the "core" index, net of the food and energy components, rose by 0,3% against the forecast of +0,2%.
Energy prices (+1%), petrol (+2%) and new car prices (1,1%) have also increased in the last month.
Wall Street did not take the news well: futures on the main US indices immediately fell into the red. The S&P 500 lost 12 basis points while the Nasdaq 100 fell 21 basis points.
As for the Milan Stock Exchange, the Ftse Mib saw a steep drop of more than 20 basis points following the news of rising inflation in the United States.
