Oil and diesel: G7 releases 100 million barrels of reserves. Trump celebrates.

The EU yields to US pressure. It approves the coordinated release of at least 100 million barrels of crude oil over the next four months and the use of diesel stockpiles within the next 20 days. Trump celebrates and changes his mind about Meloni again: "I've always liked her."

Oil and diesel: G7 releases 100 million barrels of reserves. Trump celebrates.

More oil and diesel from emergency stocks to counter the rising prices of fuelThe G7 countries once again give in to Donald Trump's pressure and say yes to the “coordinated” release of at least 100 million barrels of crude oil to be released onto the market within "four months". In an emergency meeting convened by the French rotating presidency, the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan and the United States also agreed on a “significant release” of diesel stocks already in the next 20 days, avoiding a new conflict with the US president on the energy front. This is how export ban averted of diesel fuel threatened by Trump towards Europe.

Celebrate the tycoon"Europe has agreed to release a significant amount of its diesel fuel reserves," claims Trump, who in recent days has urged Europe, led by France and Germany, to tap into their strategic oil reserves to cope with the surge in fuel prices driven by the war in the Middle East.

Also pushing Trump to raise his voice is the growing political sensitivity of fuel prices in the United States, with only a month to go until the Midterm elections. Since the outbreak of the Hormuz crisis, the US has been a major supplier of diesel to Europe, with its share of diesel imports rising from 21% in 2025 to 45% between April and May, and exceeding 50% last August.

For EU countries, a plan coordinated by the IEA and the European Commission

The release of strategic reserves will take place under the control of the International Energy Agency and, for EU countries, it will be coordinated by the European Commission. According to the IEA, so far it has been released approximately 20% of total global stocks available, while 80% still remains available. The final press release specifies that the operation will be completed in four months, while "a certificate will be released within twenty days substantial amount of diesel.”

Approximately 400 million barrels have been released onto the market, of which two-thirds have already been released and have reached the markets, while one-third has yet to arrive. Europe has released a significant portion of its reserves onto the market and remains among the regions most exposed to the diesel crisis, because of heavy dependence on imports and the fact that Russia and the Middle East, now the scene of conflict, are among the EU's traditional sources of imports.

Macron: "A clear signal of unity from the G7"

From the G7 came a ''clear signal of unity', claimed the French "host" Emmanuel Macron, sponsor of the proposal to release additional emergency stockpiles in response to Trump's pressure. A coordinated action on stockpiles, specifically diesel, was also supported by Prime Minister Meloni, who relaunched the proposal for a structured dialogue between the G7 and the Gulf countries. Brussels also agreed, denouncing the European executive's warning that "a ban would benefit no one and would undermine our trust in the United States as a reliable partner."

What remains a cause for concern, in view of a tense winter, are the high energy prices These will be the focus of the next European Council meeting on 15 and 16 October, EU leaders confirmed. "Our citizens need and deserve affordable energy," stressed EU Executive President Ursula von der Leyen.

Trump: "I never thought about banning exports. I've always liked Meloni."

Once he got what he wanted, Donald Trump praised Europe. “It was exceptional,” the president said while speaking to reporters before leaving for Alabama. The tycoon also confirmed that would not have imposed a ban on diesel exports, saying that such a measure “has never really been considered”.

The good mood dictated by his victory also led him to make a step back compared to what was said in recent months about the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, with whom relations have now been reduced to a minimum. With Meloni, Trump stated, "the relationship is very good, I always liked it”. Making a clear backtrack from what was said in recent months.
