Prysmian has acquired a contract worth around 80 million with EWA (Electricity & Water Authority of the Kingdom of Bahrain) for the construction of the new 400 kV cable ring circuit for power transmission. Part of EWA's "400 kV Transmission Development" strategic program (2009 - 2013), this project is - states a note from the group - "of crucial importance for the development of infrastructure in the Kingdom of Bahrain and is the first 400 kV XLPE submarine cable kV to be installed in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC – Gulf Cooperation Council) Region”.
The project follows the previous order awarded to Prysmian by the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority (GCCIA) for the high voltage submarine interconnection in current
alternating oil-filled cable at 400 kV between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. “This important order confirms Prysmian's commitment to the development of energy infrastructure in the Gulf area and represents recognition of the consolidated and long-lasting presence in Bahrain. We would like to thank EWA, in the person of the CEO, His Excellency Sheikh Nawaf bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, for the trust placed in Prysmian and in its ability to create the most advanced and reliable technological solutions for the development of new electricity grids of strategic importance for the Kingdom ” declared Antonio Chiantore, General Manager of Prysmian Group in the Middle East.
The order involves the design, supply, installation and testing of a 400 kV alternating current electrical connection and will include a section of 400 kV XLPE submarine cable. The Group will supply three 400 kV single-core AC and high voltage submarine cables, with metal armor and XLPE insulation, for a total of approximately 13 km, and three 400 kV HVAC underground cables with XLPE insulation for a total of approximately 46 km. Leveraging its engineering, manufacturing and installation capabilities, Prysmian will deliver a complete turnkey solution with delivery and testing of the cable loop circuit in 2019.
The submarine cables will be manufactured in the state-of-the-art plant in Pikkala (Finland), while the underground cables will be manufactured in Prysmian's center of excellence specializing in ultra-high voltage underground cables in Gron (France). The installation works on land represent a further commitment by the Group in the development of the electricity grid in Bahrain, and follow the contract relating to the "400 kV Transmission Development" (Package B), currently underway, awarded to Prysmian in 2015 and to the recent order for the 220 kV Hidd – Shamal Al Fateh cable connection where Prysmian combines a wide range of technologies to complete a strategic project.
