“There are no new shareholders on the horizon and it won't be easy to find them, unfortunately. And I stress unfortunately ”. This was stated by the president of Banca Mps, Alessandro Profumo, during the shareholders' meeting underway in Siena, which today abolished the 4% cap for shareholders other than the Foundation in the capital of the Bank.
“None of us – he added – went around looking for them. On the other hand, no one could find them in the current conditions of uncertainty, with the steps we are making at the moment".
Profumo cited as an example the approval of the industrial plan which has not yet arrived from the European Union. And also the fact that the institute must "make the closure of the current financial year by realizing the possible repayment in cash of the Monti bonds".
Monte dei Paschi will either return to a "capital base sufficient to guarantee its autonomy", or it is destined to "disappear", added Profumo: "We are the third largest banking group in Italy, but the bank can remain autonomous only if it has the capital base sufficient to guarantee this autonomy. The capital shortage was not caused by the current administration."
