Has been unlocked financing by the Swiss government for the construction of the new one intermodal terminal of Milan Smistamento. An innovative infrastructure, equipped with technically advanced equipment, important for the Sustainable Development of the transport of goods between Italy and Europe, in particular with Switzerland.

The agreement follows the memorandum of understanding signed in October between Italian FS Group and Hupac group, the main network operator in intermodal transport in Europe, aimed at increasing the offer of intermodal, land and sea services in Italy and towards other European countries.

Il green light for public funding it arrived following the meeting held on Tuesday in Rome between the top management of the FS Group and those of Hupac. Work will be started by Teralp, a subsidiary of Mercitalia Logistics and by Hupac, which builds and manages rail freight terminals in northern Italy.

Milano Smistamento: the project

Milan Sorting it will be built on an area of ​​approximately 240.000 square meters and will consist of fifteen tracks 740 meters long, six electric gantry cranes, as well as parking lots for semi-trailers, operating offices and a warehouse for storing spare parts and for minor maintenance . The total cost of the work will be around 108,5 million euros.

I jobs for the realization of the work they will last three years. Once fully operational, the terminal will have a maximum capacity of 22 pairs of trains per day, handling approximately 395.000 ITUs (intermodal transport units) annually. Thanks to the new infrastructure, it will be possible to cover, in just one year, the quantity of goods transported by 150.000 truck shipments.

Milano Smistamento: objective of the FS industrial plan

The development of Milano Smistamento falls within the objectives of Industrial plan of the FS Group to increase the quality of intermodal transport and expand the rail traffic network so as to achieve the 2030 Agenda objective of 30% of goods transported by rail.

Swiss investment outside its national borders is nothing new. The Swiss Confederation has already funded other Italian transhipment terminals. The cooperation with Hupac foresees the realization of others two new terminals in Italy a Brescia e Piacenza.

The meeting was attended by Luigi Ferraris (AD Gruppo FS), Carlo Palasciano (Chief International Officer and President of Mercitalia Logistics), Gianpiero Strisicuglio (AD Mercitalia Logsitics), Bernhard Kuntz (President of Teralp), Benedetta Masciari, (Cfo Hupac) and Piero Solcà, (adviser Teralp).
