In Italy it is officially startup-mania. This is testified by the data of the monitoring report on innovative startups, created jointly by Mise and InfoCamere, with the collaboration of Unioncamere according to which, as of 30 September, the number of startups in Italy was close to 10 thousand units, with an annual growth of 22,6 %.
In detail, in one year, the number of startups has grown from 7.866 to 9.647 units. An exponential increase that has also led to strong employment repercussions. To date, the startups employ 52,512 operating partners and employees, an increase of 33,2% over the previous year.
"The data from the 2017 financial statements currently collected by the Chamber system cover just under 60% of the startups registered at the date of the survey (59,5%)", explains Unioncamere who, however, underlines how the sample analyzed also suggests a surge in overall turnover which, in 2017, exceeded one billion euros. “The current sum – reads the report – is around 960 million euros, destined to increase with the acquisition of data not yet collected”.
Expanding the reference time horizon, the data appear to be even more encouraging. Six years after decree 179 of 2012 which defined the scope and contours of innovative startups, the latter represent the3% of all Italian capital companies under 5 years of age and in active status. The greater incidence of this type of company reaches a few important ones especially in knowledge-intensive sectors: for example, two out of three new companies with the Ateco code "Research & Development" are innovative startups (66,1%).
From a geographical point of view, one third of the innovative startups active nationwide are located in Lombardy (in numerical terms we are talking about 2.368 units). The second region by number of startups is instead Lazio, with 1.027 companies, followed by Emilia Romagna with 919.
Wanting to draw up a "provincial ranking", we find in first place Milan with 1.669 startups, followed by Rome (916) and Naples (330), which for the first time undermines Turin from 3rd place.
Trieste, Trento and Ascoli Piceno, on the other hand, rank at the top for the number of startups out of the total number of new businesses.
