Nuclear decommissioning, i.e. the dismantling of disused nuclear plants, opens its doors to citizens: the initiative, scheduled for Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 May, is called "Open Gate", has reached its second edition and is organized by Sogin, the state company responsible for the decommissioning of Italian nuclear plants and the management of radioactive waste including that produced by industrial, research and nuclear medicine activities.
The event, which is repeated after the success of registrations recorded in 2015, confirms Sogin's commitment to guaranteeing information, transparency and participation on a very delicate activity for the protection of the environment and health, but little known by the great public. With OpenGate 2017, over 3.000 visitors will have the opportunity by registering online at www.sogin.it by 20 April, to know the methods and technologies adopted by Sogin in the dismantling of nuclear plants and in the management of radioactive waste. The two days will be preceded by an educational visit to the Latina plant by around 200 students from the Pontine area.
Meanwhile Nucleco, the Sogin Group company that operates in the field of radiological services, the management of radioactive waste and the remediation of nuclear plants and industrial sites, recently signed a contract with CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, for a support service for radiological characterization within the CLEAR project .
The new contract thus expanding the presence of the Sogin Group abroad, adding to the activities carried out so far in Russia, the Slovak Republic, Germany, England, Belgium, Norway and at the Joint Research Center of the European Commission in Ispra (Varese).
Furthermore, nuclear decommissioning will also be present at Perugia International Journalism Festival, now in its eleventh edition: Sogin will also be there with the panel discussion “Telling about nuclear decommissioning: the Italian experience” scheduled for Friday 7 April from 11:30 to 12:30 at Hotel Brufani – Sala Priori.
