Company Description

Adidas it's a'German company and produces footwear, clothing and other sporting goods for both professional and leisure time.

It is the largest sportswear manufacturer in Europe and the second largest in the world after Nike.

The company is famous for its characteristic logo with three parallel and oblique stripes.

The adidas group also includes the sportswear company Reebok, Runtastic, an Austrian fitness technology company, and owns 8,33% of the German soccer team Bayern Munchen.

Adidas realizes its sales through 2.800 own stores, over 12.000 single-brand franchise stores, and over 50 e-commerce sites.

In September 2017, the largest store in Italy opened in Milan, with testimonial David Beckham.

It has about 62.200 employees.

The majority of turnover comes from sales in Asia (33,7%), Europe (27,5%) and North America (25%).

The company is listed on the Stock Exchange since 1995. Adidas shares are listed on the German market xetra and is included in the index Dax, i.e. in the 30 most capitalized companies in Germany.

Economic and financial analysis of the company

Adidas is headquartered Herzogenaurach, in Bavaria (Germany). The company was founded in 1949 by Adolf dassler after disagreements with his brother Rudolf. This quarrel had led to the split in the middle of their previous venture (Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory); from this split the Puma and Adidas.

The company was officially registered on August 18, 1949 as adidas AG. The name derives from the union of Adolf's nickname, Adi, and the first three letters of the surname Dassler.

The three stripes symbol was acquired in 1952 by the Finnish sports club Karhu Sports for the equivalent of 1.600 euros and two bottles of whisky. The logo has since been such a huge success that the company is described as the "Three Stripes Society". The trefoil logo was designed in 1971 and introduced in 1972 for the 1972 Olympics held in Munich. This logo remained in place until 1997, when the company reintroduced the three-bar logo.

With Adolf's death, the company passed into the hands of his wife and son Horst. Following the latter's financial problems, Adidas was bought in 1989 by the French financier Bernard Tapie for about 1,6 billion francs (240 million euros). Tapie then decides to move production to Asia.

In 1992, having become Minister of the French government, Tapie decided to sell the company. Entrust the sale to the bank Credit Lyonnais, controlled by the French state which in 1993 found a buyer in a group of investors led by Robert Louis-Dreyfus.

Robert Louis-Dreyfus became president of Adidas in 1994. The definitive sale of the company took place in 2000 for a sum of 4,485 billion francs (equal to approximately 683,514 million euros).

In 1995 Adidas decided to enter the Stock Exchange by listing on the Paris and Frankfurt am Main Stock Exchanges.

Acquired in 1997 the French company Solomon, specializing in winter sports equipment, and its brands Salomon, TaylorMade, Mavic and Maxfli. The group changes its name to Adidas-Salomon AG.

In 2004 a line called “Adidas by Stella McCartney” was launched in partnership with the stylist Stella McCartney. In that year, one of the most memorable marketing campaigns named "Impossible is Nothing"; this campaign will also become the company's slogan.

On May 3, 2005, Adidas announces the sale of Salomon Group for 485 million euros to the Finnish company American Sports.

In January 2006 he completes the acquisition of the footwear company Reebok for 3,8 billions of dollars.

In 2011, Adidas acquired the climbing and mountain bike shoe company Five Ten for 25 million dollars.

In January 2015 Adidas launched its app where it is possible to buy limited edition shoes of the brand.

In August 2015 he bought the Austrian company runtastic, digital company that operates in the health and fitness sector, for 220 million euros.

In 2016 Nassef Sawiris, belonging to the richest family in Egypt, takes over 6% of the company e Albert Frere, the wealthiest man in Belgium and 286th in the Forbes ranking, buys 5%.

In May 2017 Adidas sells the TaylorMade Golf Company to the KPS Capital Partners for 425 million dollars.

Adidas is sponsor of the major world clubs; among the main sponsored teams we find Bayern Munich (a club in which it also owns shares), Juventus, Real Madrid, Manchester United while among the nations there are the Germany, Argentina, Spain, Mexico and Japan.

Among the most famous testimonials there are Lionel Messi, Zinedine Zidane, Kaka, David Beckham, Arjen Robben, Iker Casillas in football, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Tim Duncan and Kobe Bryant (in his early years) in basketball.

Adidas is the official sponsor of Uefa Champions League and football world championship and supplies the balls for the competitions. It is also the main sponsor of Major League Soccer (MLS).

In other sports it is a sponsor of the All Blacks rugby.

Adidas has also dressed the teams of the NBA of basketball.
