Anticipation among olive growers is high for all that will follow. But what does the PGI brand consist of? Igp Campania oil defended by a Committee and by the Region.
In this case, the certification request has been supported since 2019 by a Campania IGP Oil Promoting Committee, by the Region and by the main agricultural organizations. Together they set the course for the protection of a product that will be added to the Giffoni hazelnut, the Montella chestnut, the Paestum artichoke, the Amalfi and Sorrento lemons, the Gragnano pasta. They are all eco-friendly productions which over the years have benefited from aid from both Europe and national institutions. A modern supply chain is organized around the oil brand and compatible with the territories and biodiversity. European recognition will become an extraordinary tool for enhancing production, but also a stimulus to improve the regional agri-food context. Despite a difficult year, due to the drought and other environmental effects, the Campania is the fourth region for the quantity of oil produced and the sixth for the area occupied. Up to now, only Tuscan oil can boast the PGI, due to territoriality and quality. For 2022, the Campania harvest will exceed 10 thousand tons, considering that from Sannio, to Cilento, to Irpinia, to the islands of the Gulf of Naples, oil is produced everywhere.
