Born in Pontormo, near Empoli, in 1494, he was orphaned at a young age and sent to Florence, the city that would shape his artistic destiny. After his early training with Leonardo da Vinci and a brief apprenticeship in Piero di Cosimo's workshop, Andrea del Sarto recognized his talent and guided him through his development, making him one of the most original artists of his generation. Pontormo lived in Medici Florence, a period of profound political, religious, and cultural transformation. If the Renaissance had constructed an ideal of balance, harmony, and classical perfection, Pontormo seized upon its moment of crisis, ushering in a new era of painting that would later be defined as Mannerism. His works abandon Renaissance composure to explore a deeply personal language: elongated figures, unexpected perspectives, unreal and luminous colors, suspended gestures, faces imbued with intense spirituality and a subtle psychological disquiet. In his paintings, reality is not simply represented, but interpreted with an emotional intensity that anticipates surprisingly modern sensibilities. His personality, described by Giorgio Vasari as reserved and melancholic, contributed to his appeal. In the last years of his life, he worked almost in isolation on the frescoes of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence, now lost, but left behind a celebrated Diary which constitutes a precious testimony of his daily life and his tormented relationship with work and with himself. The modernity of his language has spanned the centuries, fascinating artists and intellectuals of the twentieth century, from Pier Paolo Pasolini a Bill Viola, making him one of the most admired and sought-after masters of the Italian Renaissance today.
The exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale
From October 9, 2026 to February 7, 2027, the Scuderie del Quirinale will therefore present the first major monographic exhibition entirely dedicated to Pontormo. Promoted by Ales, Quirinal Stables in collaboration with the Uffizi Galleries and created together with Elect, the exhibition is curated by Cristina Acidini, one of the greatest scholars of the Florentine Renaissance, supported by a prestigious scientific committee composed of Elena Capretti, Philippe Costamagna, Bruce Edelstein and Carlo Falciani.
The exhibition brings together, for the first time, the artist's most important paintings alongside an extraordinary selection of drawings, offering a unique opportunity to retrace Pontormo's entire creative career. Alongside the numerous masterpieces from the Uffizi Galleries, the exhibition will feature works on loan from some of the most prestigious international museums, including the Galleria dell'Accademia, the Bargello Museum, the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the National Gallery in London, the British Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the Art Institute of Chicago, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and other important international collections. The heart of the exhibition will be lto very famous Visitation, exceptionally granted by the Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Carmignano. This masterpiece will be the subject of a journey that will allow us to understand the artist's evolution, the innovative power of his pictorial language, and the extraordinary richness of his imagination. More than a simple retrospective, this exhibition represents an opportunity to rediscover an artist who, at a time when the Renaissance seemed to have reached its perfect equilibrium, had the courage to transcend its boundaries, paving the way for a new concept of beauty, spirituality, and the representation of humanity. In this sense, Pontormo continues to engage with our time, reminding us that every authentic innovation arises from the ability to look beyond established models.
