Eni e KazMunayGas have electricity production started from the gas-fired power plant 120 MW built as part of the Mangystau Hybrid Power Plant, the 247 MW energy project under construction in the western region of Kazakhstan.
The system, developed together with Plenitude, represents one of the main elements of the first hybrid power plant on a large scale in the country. The project combines solar energy and gas generation and will subsequently be complemented with a wind component, with the aim of ensuring a stable and less carbon-intensive supply to KazMunayGas subsidiaries in the region.
An integrated system of gas, sun and wind
The start of production from the gas-fired power plant marks the second operational milestone of the project. The first was achieved in September 2025, with the commissioning of the 50 MW solar plant.
The gas plant is expected to be fully commissioned by third quarter of 2026Meanwhile, work will continue on the construction of the 77 MW wind farm, which is expected to become operational in 2027 and complete the hybrid configuration of the energy hub.
Through the integration of different sources, the project aims to make more reliable electricity supply local industrial activities, while simultaneously limiting emissions compared to a system based exclusively on fossil fuels. The initiative is also presented as a contribution to the diversification and modernization of the Kazakh energy sector.
Over two million hours worked without serious accidents
From the opening of the construction site until the first energy production from the gas-fired power plant, more than two million working hours were recorded without accidents involving lost time, the so-called “Lost Time Injury”.
According to Eni, this figure reflects the ability to operate a complex infrastructure project on schedule and maintain high safety standards. This achievement is also attributed to the collaboration established with KazMunayGas and the local stakeholders involved in the plant's construction.
The Mangystau Hybrid Power Plant strengthens the long-term partnership between Eni and the Kazakh energy group and supports the development of infrastructure in the region, one of the country's main industrial areas.
Eni's presence in Kazakhstan
Eni has been operating in Kazakhstan since 1992 and is primarily active in hydrocarbon exploration and production. The Italian group is co-operator of the Karachaganak field, with a 29,25% stake, and holds a 16,81% stake in the North Caspian PSA consortium.
The company also owns a 2% stake in the CPC project and a 5% stake in the BTC project. In recent years, its presence in the country has also been extended to renewable energy through Plenitude.
Eni's subsidiary currently operates 96 MW of wind capacity at the Badamsha wind farms in the Aktobe region, as well as a 50 MW solar plant in Shaulder, in the Turkestan region. The new Mangystau plant is part of the group's decarbonization strategy and the progressive expansion of low-emission energy operations in Kazakhstan.
