In addition to the economic value, the agreement has a great symbolic value, as Fincantieri thus sets a "flag" in a fundamental market such as the USA, moreover overcoming the competition of the main American shipbuilding groups involved in the tender.
The contract also provides the option for 9 additional ships, as well as after-sales support and crew training, which will bring the total value to $ 5,5 billion for Fincantieri. As part of the program, the US Navy plans to build a further 10 units, for a total of 20. “With this success – explains the press release -, Fincantieri is reaping the fruits of a long work. In addition to having developed the Littoral Combat Ships program, which provides for the construction of 16 vessels (10 of which have already been delivered), last December Marinette Marine obtained a multi-billion dollar order for the construction of 4 Multi-Mission Surface Combatants units, intended for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the United States Foreign Military Sales program”.
The Italian group won because it submitted to the US Government and the US Navy a project judged as the most advanced and innovative. In fact, Fincantieri's proposal is based on the FREMM frigate platform, considered the best in the world from a technological point of view, on which a ten-unit program for the Italian Navy that Fincantieri is completing is based.
