The two companies have signed a new memorandum of understanding that expands the collaboration already active since 2023 through the promotion of concrete initiatives for the decarbonization of the Oil & Gas sector and the reduction of emissions in Algeria.

Eni and Sonatrach expand collaboration to reduce emissions in Algeria

Eni signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoI) with Sonatrach aimed at expanding the collaboration between the two companies through the promotion of concrete initiatives for the decarbonization of the oil and gas sector , emission reduction in Algeria, while adopting international best practices. The six-legged dog company announced this in a statement, underlining that the agreement represents a further evolution of the cooperation path started in January 2023 with the signing of a three-year memorandum of understanding dedicated to reducing gas flaring, valorizing recovered gas, and mitigating emissions associated with upstream activities in Algeria.

Eni: What does the new agreement with Sonatrach include?

The new Memorandum of Understanding, based on the previous one, further expands the scope of the collaboration between Eni and Sonatrach, introducing new areas of cooperation. In particular, the parties will cooperate on initiatives for the natural CO2 removal through forestation projects and will strengthen the monitoring, quantification and reduction of methane emissions through the adoption of the main international standards in the Oil & Gas sector.

As part of the agreement signed in 2023, the note recalls, Eni and Sonatrach have developed a structured program of joint activities, which included technical analyses, capacity building initiatives and field visits, with the aim of identifying opportunities for the reduction of greenhouse gas and methane emissions and, at the same time, train technicians to independently perform on-site measurements. "The activities carried out have allowed us to identify initiatives in various areas, including the reduction of fugitive and venting emissions, energy efficiency, the development of renewable energy projects, the reduction of flaring, and the assessment of CO2 capture, use, and storage (CCUS) opportunities," Eni reports.

Among the initiatives carried out, Eni and Sonatrach have jointly conducted a Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) campaign on 800 km of pipeline, monitoring approximately 7.500 points and achieving a significant reduction in fugitive emissions. Ldar measurement campaigns are now conducted independently and regularly in all joint ventures operated by Eni and Sonatrach. Baseline emissions assessments have also been conducted at six upstream assets operated by Eni and Sonatrach in the country.

Eni has been present in Algeria since 1981, with an equity production of approximately 132.000 barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025. The company remains the leading international energy company operating in the country and continues to collaborate with Sonatrach to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Algeria.
