Wine: IGM celebrates 20 years of promoting Made in Italy around the world

Eighteen wine families, among the most important production companies in Italy, united under the Istituto Grandi Marchi banner, with the aim of disseminating the culture, traditions and set of ethical and sustainable values that constitute the excellence of Made in Italy wine, met in Rome in the new headquarters of the Foreign Press in Palazzo Grazioli to take stock of twenty years full of activities to promote Italian wine excellence in the world. The figures are truly important: in twenty years of activity IGM has transformed itself into an ambassador of quality Italian wine in the world, through the organization of annual missions which have involved 31 countries on all continents. But also 20 years of research and market insights, with 7 surveys conducted in collaboration with Wine Monitor Nomisma, as well as 4 awards to international journalists to celebrate those who, in line with IGM's mission, dedicate themselves to the promotion of Italian wines and their territories. In total it was 412 international events, 129 masterclasses, 125 walkaround tastings, 82 gala dinners that touched the five continents.

The balance sheet: 412 international events, 129 masterclasses, 125 walkaround tastings, 82 gala dinners that touched the five continents

All these activities were contextualized by presentation of research on the performance of Italian wines on international markets over the last 20 years, with a study specifically carried out by Nomisma's Wine Monitor commented by Denis Pantini and President Piero Mastroberardino. A sort of history parallel to that of the Istituto Grandi Marchi, useful for observing the megatrends, in terms of perception and purchasing behaviour, which have written the path of Italian wine on world markets.

“Celebrating the first 20 years of the Institute is a moment that generates reflections – said Piero Mastroberardino, IGM President – At the beginning of the 2000s, in a scenario in which few would have bet on a group format composed of actors accustomed to taking the stage as individual protagonists, IGM immediately took the right path. In some way E Pluribus Unum has been and continues to be our motto: many top-level wine families, each with an important past but nevertheless all willing to put their visions and attitudes at the service of a team project. As IGM immediately became a case study on the meaning and significance of working as a system, expressing the diversity of Italian production realities and, at the same time, representing the identity of Italian wine across the border. And on this occasion I like to be able to thank Piero Antinori, our first President, from whom I have taken up the baton to continue this beautiful path which already has an important past, a beautiful present and for which, given the new generations, it is easy foresee a splendid future."

Research presented on the performance of Italian wines on international markets over the last 20 years,

The 2024 calendar started with the event at the Foreign Press is obviously very intense. Next stop Milan, Tuesday 18 June, for a major charity event at the Hangar Bicocca in collaboration with Progetto ITACA, represented for the occasion by the President of the Promotion Committee Paolo Orlando who illustrated its aims. It will then be London's turn, on Tuesday 25 June, with the group's institutional event which will also offer the opportunity to confirm the historic partnership with IMW (Institute of Masters of Wine) during a special dinner at the Embassy of Italy.

“Obviously there will also be other events to accompany our twentieth anniversary – explained Piero Mastroberardino – In autumn we will be in Milan again, with an initiative which will see the IGM Youth Group as protagonist. While we have other events planned for the end of the year that we will communicate in the coming months. We can say that 2024 will be full of initiatives, exactly as has been the style since 2004."
