New troubles for Toyota. The Japanese automaker has withdrawn about 690 Tacoma pickup trucks from the US market to fix a suspension fault that could cause the vehicle to catch fire. The deal covers model years 2005 through 2011 of the Tacoma 4x4 and Tacoma PreRunner.
The rear suspension has been determined to contain a spring which could snap under pressure or corrosion. If broken, it would move from its position and make contact with the tank repeatedly, causing a puncture and possibly a fire. In recalling the models, Toyota said it is not aware of any incidents related to the condition.
A spokesman for the auto company also recalled 100 units outside the United States. This is the third recall for Toyota cars this month, involving a total of 840.000 vehicles. As of Sept. 18, the company had taken 20 cars off the market due to a bad engine gimmick.
Withdrawn from the market were the 2015 model of the Lexus RX luxury car and four 2014 models: Avalon, Camry, Highlander and Sienna. Also in this case there would have been no incidents relating to the malfunction identified. The September 11 recall affected 130,000 units of the 2014 model year Tundra.
