"South American Diary", a new book by Giulio Sapelli full of reflections on a growing world

"Mario and I looked at each other and understood that we had become part of a story, in our sick, tiny littleness, in the great river of political transformation".

A life lived studying politics, and with it the economy, society, cultures and the world. It's the life of Julius Sapelli, full professor of Economic History at the University of Milan, successful essayist and lecturer who in his latest book, "South American Diary" (Guerini publisher), traces the last 40 years that have taken him far and wide in that region of the world called South America.

It is a particular diary, which from the writer's experience, from the concrete stories of the friends, teachers, famous people who accompanied his journey through those lands, manages to shed light on one history of three decades. The scholarly vocation adds authority and objectivity to that intimate and personal point of view that runs throughout the book and makes it so pleasant to read.

From the coups of the 70s to the early 2000s, Sapelli tells his story of Chile, Brazil, Ecuador, Argentina and Peru which, however, they are also mirror of an Italy, where a young PCI activist becomes an adult chasing his utopias, e of a Spain and a Portugal where terrible dictatorships have been too much inspiration for the Latin American sisters.

More than a book "South American Diary" is a journey full of suggestions and reflections, where memories are the Powerful that crosses the continent in space and time. A rite of passage to metabolise the past and look towards the future with the awareness of the experiences that have made us who we are today. A journey that enriches anyone who gets carried away and that is worth taking.
