Berebianco: the great white wines for aging are presented in Rome

The great Italian white wines for aging are presented in Rome a Berebianco, the scheduled event next May 25th, at The Westin Excelsior Hotel in via Veneto: 65 wineries and 150 labels will be the protagonists of a tasting journey among the most interesting Italian white producers from 13 regions of the country. For some years now, the production of white wines which require time to express themselves at their best has become increasingly popular and which retain characteristics of complexity and pleasantness for years, they are the protagonists of Berebianco who, except for a few cases, make struggles to achieve the positioning they deserve on international markets.

One hundred and fifty labels from all over Italy to attest to a new wine panorama that has not had the right recognition

A sector, that of white wines, in which Italy enjoys a palette of noble expressions ranging from the Aosta Valley to Sicily, for profoundly different and extremely identifying interpretations, thanks to an interaction between territory, vine and man without conditioning. There are many excellent wines offered on the market, many have achieved great commercial success, but national and international recognition of a movement never arrived and the image of Italian white wine is stereotyped in the model of simple, fragrant, agile wine, to be consumed already before the beginning of the spring following the harvest.

The gap in export value is significant: the average price per liter of whites in 2023 was 2,82 euros compared to 4,58 for reds

“The export data are ruthless from this point of view – he says Francesco D'Agostino, director of Cucina & Vini –. On the one hand, the difference in exports in volume between Reds and Whites tends to reduce with the former averaging between six and seven million hectoliters (including rosé wines) and the others around six (6,70 million Reds and 5,94 the Whites, Istat data 2023); on the other the average export price per liter obtained by the Whites in 2023 was 2,82 euros compared to 4,58 for the Reds, both down compared to 2022, more decisive for the Whites with -3,75% compared to the Reds at -0,87%. The trend of the average export price over twelve years demonstrates the difference between the two types; considering that the data for red wines include rosé wines, whose export prices are decidedly lower, the difference is even greater.

To support great whites in their progression towards the right positioning in the global market we think it is necessary to start from the domestic one, bringing this fascinating family to the public in a large free tasting. Not only that, but also giving the opportunity to taste engaging old vintages during exclusive masterclasses in the presence of the producers."

Special guest of Berebianco 2024 will be the Gavi Protection Consortium with over twenty different labels in the free tasting and with a masterclass dedicated to the aging capacity of the Piedmontese DOCG with a vertical over ten years.

“Berebianco will soon enjoy particular editorial support from the Cucina & Vini editorial team to make communication more effective also at an international level, convinced that the format can become a reference for the production world and for that of wine lovers”, concludes D' Augustine.

There will be no shortage of food pairings entrusted to the creativity of Il Pescatorio, which for ten years has dedicated itself to selecting the best local fish, which will be present in Berebianco with a desk where the public will be able to purchase both hot and cold seafood delicacies.
