The last transport to la ended tonight France of the irradiated fuel still present in the nuclear power plant'Enrico Fermi' of Trino (Vercelli). The last 23 fuel elements left the plant in special containers (casks) and will be reprocessed in the French plant in La Hague.
This transport is part of the program for the transfer of irradiated fuel abroad, launched following the intergovernmental agreement between France and Italy signed in Lucca on 24 November 2006. These operations took place in compliance with national and international legislation under the control of the competent authorities to ensure maximum safety for the population and the environment, informs a note from Sogin.
In a second stage, the residues from the reprocessing will return to Italy to be temporarily transferred to the National Deposit, a deposit which has not yet been created, however. Sogin, in fact, has started the process and sent the Charter of eligible sites to the government.
A Charter that has also been approved by Ispra but the go-ahead from the government is still missing: after an initial postponement under the regional elections, to avoid a decision on such a delicate issue in the middle of August it was preferred to wait for the fall return. And now the expectation is that the government will express its opinion by the end of 2015.
