The CEO of Intesa Sanpaolo, Charles Messina, openly blesses theUnicredit Ops su Bpm bank and compares it to the acquisition of theUbi previously made by his bank: “It makes industrial sense”. It is a welcome assist for Andrea Orcell, the CEO of Unicredit has always had excellent personal relations with Messina despite the rivalry between the two banks. Messina immediately clarifies, however, that Intesa will not be able to enter the field in the operation because antitrust limits prevent it: "We cannot be the white knight" of Banco Bpm.
But what matters most and what makes Messina's speech the most relevant news of the financial day is that the CEO of Intesa Sanpaolo clears the field of a series of absurd paradoxes and the acid words of the ministers of Alloy. Messina acknowledges that Orcel has made a market operation, in front of which the Government has the possibility to intervene only in the case of national security problems, "which I don't think there are" and therefore the fate of the Ops is up to the ECB and the shareholders to decide. "There is no problem of Golden Power” adds Messina.
The head of Intesa Sanpaolo also appeared to downplay the risks of redundancies evoked by the CEO of Banco Bpm, Giuseppe Castagna, maintaining that the role of the unions will be important in this regard.
More cautious however President of ABI, Antonio Patuelli: “Abi is not involved in these events (those of Unicredit and Banco Bpm, ed) but let's look and note the great liveliness of the Italian banking market, which is very far from the petrified forest, and let's note the changes that have taken place".
