President Mattarella dissolves the Chambers: we will vote within 70 days and exactly on 25 September

“It's always the last choice”, underlines the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, but there was nothing else to do. The Head of State has dissolved the Chambers. So the countdown to the elections starts: there will be 70 days to bring Italy to the polls. Voting will take place on 25 September, a week earlier than initially expected.

Mattarella has dissolved the Chambers: "It was the last choice, now I'm asking for everyone's contribution"

After meeting the presidents of the Chambers, Roberto Fico and Maria Elisabetta Alberti Casellati, the President of the Republic presented himself in front of the microphones of the Quirinale. A short speech, his, but clear. “As officially communicated I signed the dissolution decree to call new elections within 70 days,” Mattarella said.

"The government has resignedin taking note of it I thanked Mario Draghi and the ministers for their commitment in these 18 months”, continued the Head of State. "The Government is encountering limitations in its activity, but it has the tools to operate in these months before the arrival of the new Executive".

"The political situation led to the decision to dissolve the chambers: the discussion, the vote and the ways in which it was expressed yesterday made evident the loss of Parliament's support for the Government and theabsence of prospects of creating a new majority, making the dissolution of the Chambers obligatory”, explained the President of the Republic.

“The early dissolution of Parliament is always the last choice to make, particularly if, as in this period, there are many important obligations before the Chambers to be completed in the interest of our country. But the political situation that arose led to this decision,” he added.

Then a warning that sounds like a message to the parties: “No breaks are possible At the moment we are going through, energy costs have consequences for families and businesses, economic difficulties must be faced, there are many obligations to close in Italy's interest. It goes hand in hand with these needs the implementation within the agreed times of the Pnrrnor can action to combat the pandemic be ignored,” he said.

“I hope that – even in the intense, and sometimes acute, dialectic of the electoral campaign – there is, from all, a constructive contribution, regarding the aspects that I have indicated, in the best interests of Italy”, concluded Mattarella.

The Draghi government at work on the Nadef, Competition law in the Chamber without taxis

While the parties will be engaged in the summer electoral campaign, the Draghi government will take care of the Nadef, the Def update note which must be presented by 27 September to update the economic and financial forecasts for Italy. With regard to the ManeuverInstead, it will be defined and approved by the new government that will emerge after the elections, even if times will be very tight: the budget law must in fact be presented to the Chambers by 15 October.

In these 70 days, Draghi, as resigning Premier, will maintain the international agenda "to which he will in any case present himself with the credibility of Mario Draghi", writes Il Sole 24 Ore.
In the meantime it has been scheduled the arrival in the Chamber of the Competition Bill. The bill will arrive in Montecitorio on Monday 25 July, but without the now well-known article 10 on taxi drivers, which was suppressed in committee.
