For the and students who are in a Municipality of a Region different from that of the Municipality of electoral registration, for at least three months between the European elections, a new possibility opens up: they can request by 5 May to exercise the right to "out of office" vote. This solution, although experimental and limited to the European elections next June, could revolutionize the way in which students participate in the electoral process, eliminating the barriers that often force them to give up voting.
Students: how to vote "off campus"?
Interested students must submit the request to their municipality of residence by May 5, using the form provided by Ministry of the Interior. By June 4th, they will receive a certificate of admission to vote, indicating the polling station where they can exercise their right, and must be shown at the polling station, together with the identification document and the electoral card. In case of change of decision, the request can be revoked by May 15, 2024.
How does it work?
For students domiciled for at least three months in a municipality other than their residence and their region, there are two options:
- Vote in the municipality of domicile: If the municipality of domicile is in the same electoral district as the municipality of residence.
- Vote in special polling stations: If the municipality of domicile is in a different electoral constituency, they will be able to vote in specially established polling stations in the regional capital of the municipality of domicile.
Furthermore, students who can vote off-site in the special sections of the regional capitals could be called upon to act as members of the special polling stations, if the mayors deem it appropriate.
This flexibility allows students to cast their vote for candidates in their home constituency, wherever they are, without inconvenience or additional costs.
