Optical fiber and better connectivity on roads and railways: the FS Group's plan for digital

Optic fiber and better connectivity on roads e railways arriving in rural areas and urban centers. It is the plan of the Fs Italiane Group - which combines physical infrastructures (17 thousand km of railways and 32 thousand km of roads) with digital ones - illustrated by the group's CEO, Luigi Ferraris, in his speech at the first edition of ComoLake – Next Generation Innovations. The top manager confirmed what has already been presented in the FS ten-year industrial plan which he sees in the digitization and in ' innovation the enabling factors of all activities. Ferraris then presented Gigabit Rail&Road, a project which aims to implement connectivity throughout the territory through optical fiber along railway lines and expanding the signal 5G in favor of the entire country system. In line with the objectives of the European Commission and with the interventions already foreseen by National Recovery and Resilience Plan (Pnrr).

The next challenges

The number one of the Group then spoke about the next ones challenges that await Italy in the short term, on which the group led by him can provide an important contribution: the exponential growth of digital data, transport, storage and dissemination activities and, finally, the offer to citizens and businesses of digital services.

Among the concrete examples, the CEO cited the possibility of bringing fiber optics into the 2.200 active railway stations which, together with public administrations, are the nerve center of urban areas, and in over 500 stations which today are no longer used for mobility, but which can bring better connectivity to neighboring or rural areas and push towards greater competitiveness of the sectors industrial and agricultural sector of the country.
