Protagonist par excellence of the Mediterranean dietea, due to its nutraceutical and food properties, extra virgin olive oil has known a real boom in the year of Covid, as a consequence of greater attention paid in Italy and abroad to a wholesome and wholesome diet. A European report has highlighted that exports to non-European countries between October 2019 and September 2020 recorded a + 15,6%.
After Spain, Italy is the second largest producer of olive oil in Europe and in the world, with an average national production of over 464 tons, two thirds of which extra virgin. Also, Italy owns 41 PDO denominations and one PGI recognized by the European Union.
One of the most authoritative guides of Italian extra virgin olive oils is Bibenda, edited by a panel of tasters from the Italian Sommelier Foundation which every year draws a reasoned picture of the best production throughout the boot. On the basis of the tastings carried out, 170m companies were identified worthy of winning the five drops of oil, the highest award given.
On the first podium of Italian excellence this year goes up, but the result is all too obvious, the Tuscany with 39 companies. Il second place goes – but again nothing new – to Puglia which, despite being scourged by the deadly Xylella which halved its production, brought home as many as 32 companies awarded the five drops of oil. The third place went to Umbria with 19 awarded companies. They did a lot of honor Lazio and Sicily which come immediately after with 18 companies each. Following, with considerable detachment, Veneto and Abruzzo with 7 companiesde; Trentino, Calabria and Sardinia with 5; Emilia-Romagna and Campania with 4, Marche with 3; Liguria and Lombardy with 2. Last Molise with one company.
“What is particularly striking - observes Daniela Scrobogna, taster of the Guide published by the Italian Sommelier Foundation - is the quality level expressed by Italian producers, in general. An awareness is perceived that was not there a few years ago. The new generations have taken over from their fathers and on the basis of the acquired know-how they are moving towards an uncompromising production of oil. Ever cleaner and more perfect oil, which from an organoleptic point of view gives us not only pleasure but also emotion, such is the strength of the cultivar. And precisely this attention to the raw material has led to the rediscovery of ancient forgotten cultivars and the confirmation of others considered minor and obscured for some time.
Pidicuddara, Santagatese, Minuta di Chiusi, Verdello, just to name a few.
The quality of the 2020/2021 vintage - adds Daniela Scrobogna - is of a good level in some regions of the North and Center, a little less in the South. This differentiation is linked to meteorological problems and infestations that
affected the quality of the crop. So a problematic vintage that prompted individual producers to express their potential to the fullest. Clearly a quality that can be amplified by correct practices both in the field and in the production processes, such as harvesting early, processing the olives with modern systems (definitively setting aside the traditional / fiscoli system) and storing under nitrogen. They can thus be distinguished in production
2020/2021 the quality producers who, despite the bad year, offered us excellent products and others who highlighted even more the gap that separates them from the top quality. In the first case we found oils of great value that have expressed extremely positive characteristics: fragrance, wide range of perfumes, great gustatory personality, peculiarities that will go well with our Gastronomy".
