SIAD invests €12 million in green hydrogen: new plant in the province of Caserta

A 2 MW electrolyzer powered by photovoltaic panels and batteries has been inaugurated in Pignataro Maggiore. The Green Hydrogen Igat project has received €8 million from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and aims to provide renewable hydrogen to businesses.

SIAD invests €12 million in green hydrogen: new plant in the province of Caserta

Over 12 million euros to produce green hydrogen intended for industry. It is the investment made by the Siad Group a Pignataro Maggiore, in the province of Caserta, where the 30th September was inaugurated new Green Hydrogen Igat plantThe project, developed in the Igat plant, a group company active in the production of nitrogen, oxygen and argon, aims to integrate production from renewable sources and technologies for the decarbonisation of industrial processes.

The initiative was admitted to a €8 million in funding under the NRP, through the "Green Revolution and Ecological Transition" call for proposals managed by the Campania Region. The investment is part of a broader development of solutions to promote the use of renewable hydrogen and support businesses in reducing emissions.

A 2 MW electrolyzer powered by photovoltaics

The new plant is located in the area adjacent to the Igat plant dedicated to air separation and includes a 2 MW PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolyzer. Power comes exclusively from a 2,37 MWp photovoltaic field and one 1 MW battery storage systemThe system allows you to use thesolar energy to produce renewable hydrogen High purity. The electrolyzer was built in a containerized configuration and integrates the main equipment required for the process, from water treatment and purification to hydrogen purification, which can reach a purity of 99,999%.

Downstream of production, hydrogen is compressed up to 500 bar and can be supplied to customers through cylinder packs and cylinder trailers. The product is primarily intended for companies that already use hydrogen in their chemical, physical, and manufacturing processes, with the aim of offering a renewable alternative to reduce the emissions footprint of production activities. The choice of Pem technology It also allows for flexible management of production based on the availability of the renewable source, a particularly important feature for a photovoltaic-powered system.

The project expands an activity in which SIAD already has significant experience: the group owns several hydrogen production plants and one of the most extensive hydrogen pipeline networks in Italy. This experience also extends to the production of hydrogen with a purity grade of 7.0, necessary for applications in the electronics industry.

“Green Hydrogen Igat – explained the president and CEO of the Siad Group Bernardo Sestini "It's not just a new plant, but a visionary industrial project, capable of connecting the immediate needs of businesses with the objectives of the energy transition." According to Sestini, the project is part of the group's long-term strategy, focused on "innovation, sustainability, safety, and the development of advanced technological solutions" for industry. The new plant is also part of a broader investment program in Italy and abroad, aimed at increasing production capacity and supporting companies on their energy transition journey.

Among the interventions recently carried out by the group are: the Leopoldov plant, in Slovakia, dedicated to the recovery and liquefaction of biogenic CO₂ from bioethanol, and the Oxy plant In Croatia, a production joint venture with the Sol Group (60% Siad and 40% Sol) for the production of industrial gases through air separation. In Italy, three plants are being completed: Marghera, for large ASUs and LNG plants; Seriate, for the production of compressors; and Castelfranco di Sotto, in Tuscany, for the production of industrial gases through air separation.

For Massimo Iorio, CEO of Igat, the project represents an important step for the Campania plant, because it strengthens its role as an industrial platform oriented towards innovation and sustainability"The green hydrogen plant is not only a productive investment, but also a concrete basis for developing research, development, and experimentation into new applications of hydrogen in industrial processes. From this perspective, Igat views the project as an opportunity for technological and regional growth, without ruling out possible future expansion of the plant based on evolving demand and market potential."
