It kicks off Acea's operational management in SicilyAretusacque, a group company, has officially assumed management of the integrated water service in the Municipality of Syracuse, thus initiating the operational process envisaged for the assignment of management of the entire Syracuse Territorial Water Area (ATI).
The takeover will affect immediately approximately 115.000 inhabitants of the Aretusean capital and represents the first step in a broader process of taking charge of the province's integrated water service. Within the next 12 months, in fact, Aretusacque "will progressively extend its management to 19 municipalities within the province of Syracuse, as provided for in the Management Agreement signed on 19 December 2025", the company informs.
With the thirty-year contract, the company will manage an infrastructure system that includes approximately 2.000 kilometers of water supply network, 1.300 kilometers of sewerage network, and 166.000 water users, serving a total of approximately 390.000 residents.
Over 360 million investments expected
During the duration of the concession, through Aretusacque, Acea will make total investments of 366 million of euros aimed at improving network efficiency, reducing water losses, strengthening existing infrastructure, building new wastewater treatment infrastructure, technological innovation in management systems, and improving the overall quality of service provided to citizens.
"Aretusacque will ensure operational continuity in the management of the integrated water service by acquiring the infrastructure envisaged in the tender, ensuring the progressive consolidation of a management model focused on efficiency, sustainability, and water service quality, drawing on over 80 years of proven experience from Acea, Italy's leading water infrastructure operator," the company statement reads. The first step was completed on Wednesday, June 24, with the hiring of all employees from the previous water service provider at Aretusacque Spa under unchanged working conditions.
