In politics as in life dreams end at dawn. That of Giorgia Meloni to act as a bridge between theEurope andAmerica ended earlier than expected. The blitz of January 5th from Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago it was a brilliant idea of the Prime Minister that paved the way for the masterpiece of the liberation of Cecilia Sala. More controversial was Meloni's participation, without the EU, in Trump's Inauguration Day where the Prime Minister began to perceive that the rapprochement with the new American President would not be a walk in the park. But what threw Meloni into despair and definitively displaced her on the international scene (her disappointed expression at the Paris summit on Monday speaks for itself) was Trump's unexpected attack against Zelensky and her contempt for the Ukrainian president whom the prime minister has always deservedly supported. Meloni does not want to break with Trump but does not want to and cannot give up Zelensky: how to get out of the puzzle is yet to be invented.
But Italians would like to understand which side Italy is on: with Trump's America or with Europe that supports Zelensky's Ukraine and does not intend to surrender to the Tsar's imperial ambitions. Vladimir Putin? For now Meloni is silent but the silence cannot last long. One thing is certain: the one who will act as a bridge between Europe and America will not be her but the French President Emmanuel Macron and the British premier Keir Starmer, who are preparing to fly to Trump to negotiate with a straight back in the name of European sovereignty. Among the few miracles that the international upheaval caused by the Trump cyclone has determined, there is an unexpected one but of great importance also for the future that perhaps has not yet been fully understood: the progressive rapprochement of Great Britain to the EU that unequivocally strengthens Europe after the madness of Brexit. Fortunately, this is not a dream but reality even if in this match Meloni did not touch the ball.
