The process for the infrastructure that will improve the electricity exchange capacity for a more sustainable energy future is underway: the Tyrrhenian Link-East Branch, the section of Terna's submarine power line that connects Campania-Sicily. The Ministry of Ecological Transition has signed the formal start of the authorization procedure. For a total length of 480 km, the Eastern section connects the Sicilian port of Fiumetorto, in the Municipality of Termini Imerese in the province of Palermo, to Torre Tuscia Magazzeno, located in the Municipality of Battipaglia, in the Salerno area.
The Tyrrhenian Link is a strategic work for the Italian electricity system for which the company led by Stefano Donnarumma will invest around 3,7 billion in the coming years, involving around 250 companies in the construction. The new infrastructure will allow for greater integration between the different market areas and more effective use of the energy flows from renewables, constantly increasing.
The new interconnection provides for the construction of two submarine power lines (one from Campania to Sicily and one from Sicily to Sardinia) for a total of 950 km of 1000MW direct current connection. The work will be fully operational in 2028, but the first cable will be operational as early as the end of 2025.
In detail, the project envisages, in Campania, the construction of a conversion station in Eboli (in the area of the former fruit and vegetable market), connected to the Torre Tuscia Magazzeno landing stage by a 15 km underground cable power line which will run along existing roads without altering the environment and landscape. Even the sorting station will be built in Eboli (realized in GIS) and it will be possible to use half of the surface initially envisaged by the project.
As for the Sicilia, the conversion station will be built in Termini Imerese, in the locality of Caracoli, and will be connected to the Fiumetorto landing place with an underground cable route of approximately 10 km. Furthermore, a new 380kV section will be built within the existing one in Caracoli. All parties interested in the project may present written observations to the Ministry within 30 days of the date of publication of the start of the procedure.
