Open Fiber brings ultra-broadband to Santa Margherita di Belice: ultra-fast internet for over 4.000 properties

Open Fiber, one of the main Italian companies of optical fibera, concluded the works for the construction of the ultra-broadband network in Santa Margherita di Belice, in the municipality of Agrigento. This new infrastructure will allow citizens, businesses and professionals in the area to access the Internet with cutting-edge performance.

Ultra-fast internet for local communities

Open Fiber's intervention focused in particular on less populated areas and until now without ultra-fast connectivity. The network is covered by FTTH (Fiber-to-the-home) and FWA (Fixed Wireless Access) technologies. The latter solution provides for the optical fiber connection of the radio base stations, in order to reach the real estate units dispersed in areas with low population density.

Thanks to this new network, 4.176 real estate units in Santa Margherita di Belice will benefit from an ultra-fast connection. The covered buildings include the municipal nursery school, the "Rosa Agazzi" nursery school, the "San Giovanni Bosco" elementary school, the "Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa" middle school, the fire brigade barracks, the former Fire Brigade detachment, the Forestry Corps detachment, the Town Hall, the Municipal Police barracks, the Museum, the municipal library, the Employment Centre, the Medical Guard and Palazzo Sacco.

A step forward for the digitization of Sicily

This intervention is part of the Ultra Broadband Plan (BUL), which aims at digitization of the territory and that it was financed with regional and state funds. The Bul Plan is managed by Infratel Italia, an in-house company of the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy, with the coordination of the Sicilian Region. Thanks to innovative and sustainable excavation techniques, Open Fiber has managed to reduce the environmental impact during the laying of the fiber, using already existing infrastructures.

The new ultra broadband network will offer many advantages for the citizens of Santa Margherita di Belice. Thanks to FTTH technologies and the Open Fiber cabling project, it will be possible to take advantage of fast and high-performance connections for smart working, streaming of HD content, online purchases and access to online public services.
