Di Maio and Salvini, champions of fear of the future and of security

The basic income and the abolition of the Fornero law on pensions as well as the promise to expel irregular migrants have inflated the sails of the Five Stars and the League and once again the perception of reality has prevailed – as in Trump's America – over reality.

It's not just the five-year opposition position income that fills the sails of the Five Star Movement and the League. There is much more in the full number of votes they collected in the March 4 elections but above all two things: the fear of the future that crosses the North and even more so the South and which has its hard core in the new generations but also the anxiety about security, considered at risk due to immigration. Both Di Maio - with the basic income - and Salvini - with the will to expel 600 migrants - have perfectly intercepted these feelings even if their promises will probably remain sailor's promises.

Europe's unpopularity has done the rest and has added strength to the two populist camps which promise simplistic and often demagogic solutions to very complex problems which in many cases (from globalization to immigration) cannot be resolved in a single country.

Once again the perception of reality prevailed over reality. As happened in America with the victory of Trump who, despite being a billionaire, collected the votes of the workers and the white middle class.

It is worth little to consider that all our economic and financial indicators are improving and that Italy has come out of the recession. The perception that especially the younger ones have is different: little work, a lot of precariousness, insufficient wages, pensions off the future radar. And it is no coincidence that the Five Stars, with the chimera of basic income and pensions for all, make a bang in the South.

In the North, on the other hand, it was above all the fear of safety that made Salvini fly, who, paradoxically, multiplied his connections after the tragic events in Macerata, where one of his sympathizers shot wildly and wounded black citizens. Here too, the reasonable management of migratory flows by the Minister of the Interior Minniti has been of little use, who has practically zeroed the landings and who has garnered support from all over the world.

When you vote with your belly, there's no reason to hold on, even if sooner or later the knots will come home to roost.
