Magneti Marelli: safe employment with Japanese fusion

The Management of Magneti Marelli has reassured the unions on the stability of jobs after the merger with the Japanese Calsonic - The new group will become one of the top 10 manufacturers in the world of car components

Magneti Marelli: safe employment with Japanese fusion

In the meeting held today in Corbetta (Milan), the Magneti Marelli company management confirmed that the sale of Magneti Marelli from FCA to Calsonic Kansei, which will be finalized in the first half of 2019, it will not affect the workers. On the contrary, the CEO Ermanno Ferrari underlined that the company to be formed will be the result of a true merger, as evidenced by its very name "Magneti Marelli CK Holdings" as well as the maintenance of the operational headquarters in Corbetta and will establish itself as one of the world's top 10 auto parts manufacturers with a turnover of €15,2 billion and more than 65.000 employees.

“Moreover – explains a joint note from the unions EndUilmfismicuglmAqcfr – the multi-year supply agreement with FCA ensures a stable industrial and employment future for Italian production sites. The positive aspect is the strong complementarity of the two groups, geographical and productive. First of all, Calsonic is very present in Asia and in particular in Japan, more generally in the countries where the Nissan plants are located; this also applies in Europe since Calsonic Kansei is significantly present in the UK and Romania with factories of radiators and components for heating and cooling, products that Magneti Marelli does not produce. Furthermore, with the exception of exhaust systems and some electronics which represent sectors shared by both companies, Calsonic is strong in areas other than those of Magneti Marelli, namely in the production of passenger compartments, compressors, radiators and systems conditioning; Calsonic's expertise is particularly strong in exhaust systems, but its factories are not located in Europe. It is also expected that the new Magneti Marelli will have more resources and opportunities to invest in the field of electronics and electrification, especially on the Asian markets where Marelli has always struggled to be present”.

As known, the PCMA realities will not be transferred, which consequently remain in FCA; their exclusion derives from their very close link to the FCA productions. Finally, there will be no contractual consequences, if only because on December 31, 2018, the expiry date of the CCSL, Magneti Marelli will still be fully owned by FCA. Fim, Uilm, Fismic, Uglm, Aqcfr therefore “expressed a positive assessment on the basis of the information that has emerged, both for positive employment aspects and the prospects of the plants, and a comparison with the new owners is expected when the sale-merger procedure will be completed. A comparison will then also be necessary with regard to the PCMA realities, to understand how they will be materially maintained in the FCA group and with what strategies".
