In the last ten years, the sales value of organic food has almost tripled (+181%). One consumer out of three perceives Italy as an excellence in food & wine

Made in Italy, organic exports fly (+16%): Germany, France and Benelux are the main destinations

In 2022 the sales of Italian organic food products on international markets they reached 3,4 billion euros, with an increase of 16% compared to 2021. Long-term results also bear witness to this, with a value that has almost tripled (+181%) in ten years. This is the reading on the trend of the sector, elaborated by Nomisma in the light of the latest analyzes produced by the SANA Observatory.

The results of the monitoring will be presented at the fifth edition of Organic Revolution – event planned within the 35th International Exhibition of organic and natural products – scheduled at BolognaFiere from 7 to September 8. According to forecasts, last year the majority of organic exports (81% of the total) concerned food for a value of 2,7 billion, with a growth of +16% on 2021. The role of wine which accounts for the remaining 19%. In absolute terms we are talking about 626 million euros in wine, +18% compared to 2021 and an 8% share of total Italian wine exports.

Germany, France and Benelux are all crazy about Made in Italy bio

The main destinations in Europe for Italian food bio i'm there Germany, France e Benelux. For wine, the German market is still the leader, followed by the Scandinavian and Benelux countries. To decree the success of the Italian organic abroad, the quality of the products and the general interest of foreign consumers for Made in Italy remain (respectively indicated by 66% and 60% of companies). The equivalence of the European organic brand (34%), the high average per capita expenditure for organic products (33%) and the guarantees associated with organic food products (24%) are also considered elements of success.

According to Italian companies, the aspects that represent the greatest obstacles on the other hand, the costs linked to promotional activities on international markets (perceived as an obstacle by 42% of companies), local regulations/bureaucracy and price competition by local companies ( factors both indicated by 37%).

In all the markets analysed, they stand out huge growth opportunities: by the consumer Italy is always and in any case perceived as top quality in food & wine – on average one out of three places Italy in first place in the ranking of the countries from which the highest quality food products come.
