Lombardy: Letizia Moratti gives up Fontana and attacks the Meloni government on doctors, vaccines and the fight against Covid

Letizia Moratti he resigns as vice president and councilor for Welfare of the Lombardy region. She communicated it herself in a press release. “Out of respect for the citizens, with a sense of responsibility and in consideration of the country's delicate socio-economic moment, I awaited the outcome of the political elections and the formation of the new government to make my position known. For these reasons, and only today, faced with the loss of the relationship of trust with the president Attilio Fontana, I announce the decision to relinquish the powers of vice president and councilor for welfare of the Lombardy Region”, wrote Moratti. Among the reasons that led the former mayor of Milan to take this decision, "a strong signal with respect to the slowness and difficulties in the action of this Administration, which in my opinion no longer responds to the interests of the citizens of Lombardy".

The resignation is certainly not a bolt from the blue. They come after months of complicated relations between her and the center-right but also between her and President Attilio Fontana, who had confirmed the irreconcilable inequalities. This is an indication for a possible descent into the field as an opponent of Fontana in view of the Regionals of 2023? His press office has not commented on this at the moment.

Moratti against the reinstatement of no-vax doctors and fines remission

"A choice of clarity that I fully accept, also in consideration of the contradictory measures taken in the fight against the pandemic", continued Moratti. "On the one hand, I positively acknowledge that the line I established for Lombard citizens was to follow the opinion of the experts of the Lombard control room that I activated on themask requirement in hospitals and Rsa. On the other hand, I register with concern the decision to anticipate the reinstatement of doctors and other unvaccinated health professionals, the forgiveness on fines for no vax and the different sensitivity on the importance of vaccines. These are three examples, emblematic of a different political approach in this area ”, she continued.

Letizia Moratti resigns and defends vaccination against Covid

A clear and precise position also contrary to the former measures of the Meloni Government: “I believe, in fact, that if today the country is safe as regards the Covid, we undoubtedly owe it to the massive adherence to the vaccination campaign of the past months. Which was successful thanks to the extraordinary sense of civic responsibility of the Lombard citizens, as well as the enormous commitment of doctors, nurses, soldiers, civil protection and volunteers, protagonists of a process that has led Lombardy to be among the first areas in the world for membership and coverage. A success to be proud of and which is now being questioned by measures that I do not agree with".

Community Houses

Fontana's decisions are therefore awaited. In giving the resignation, the former mayor of Milan remains "at the disposal of the Region for an orderly handover of the progress of the projects that I have and have activated".

The Lombard entrepreneur refers to issues and policies that "are particularly close to my heart, the subject of my latest proposals for resolutions concerning important public investments for the health of citizens, for the creation of further Community houses and to drastically reduce waiting lists in clinics”.
