Renzi and Bonino against the grain: better in the European Parliament than in the Italian one. Smart choice but promises to be honoured

Unlike all the other leaders who ask for a vote for the European Parliament but will never go, Renzi and Bonino of United States of Europe have already announced that, if elected, they will resign from the Italian Parliament to move to Brussels. It is a courageous choice that will be promptly honored but which reveals that Renzi and Bonino have perfectly understood that the future is no longer played in Italy but in Europe

Renzi and Bonino against the grain: better in the European Parliament than in the Italian one. Smart choice but promises to be honoured

Everything can be said of Matteo Renzi unless you don't like to brawl and catch your opponents off guard. He did it in 2021 when, in perfect solitude and under a barrage of criticism from the usual right-thinking people, he pushed the Conte government 2 and paved the way for the choice of President Sergio Mattarella to call Mario Draghi at the helm of the new Government. Renzi is repeating himself in recent days by running at the last minute, but in last place so as not to appear cumbersome, in the lists of United States of Europe with Emma Bonino. With a substantial difference compared to the other political leaders who ask for a vote for Brussels but will never go there: Renzi and Bonino have solemnly promised that, if elected, they will leave the Italian Parliament and they will move bag and baggage into European Parliament. It is a courageous but above all intelligent choice because, as Draghi always repeats, the problems of the energy and digital transition, but also the problems of defense and the demographic crisis, are so large and require such demanding investments that no country can think to solve them at home. The real battle of the future is no longer played in Italy but in Europe but in a Europe to be redone from top to bottom, as Macron and Draghi say and as Renzi and Bonino promise. Leaving the Italian Parliament is a counter-current choice but this time shell games, as all the other leaders are doing, will not be tolerated without losing face. Renzi and Bonino have made a solemn promise, which deserves applause, but woe betide you if you don't honor it to the full.
