"Gentleman entrepreneur", with a sense of duty even greater than his infinite love for sailing and the sea: for everyone this was the distinctive human and professional trait of the leader of the third generation of Pirelli. "Leopoldo Pirelli, the serious Italian", wrote the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung a few years earlier, in September 1990, recognizing his qualities, just as Pirelli was preparing to acquire the German tire group Continental. That acquisition did not go through. Nonetheless, opinion on the entrepreneur at the head of Pirelli remained widespread in public opinion, as he was among the first to intuit the need for internationalisation.
There is a great ethics of responsibility in the history of the men who, in almost a century and a half of history, have built Pirelli, from the founder Giovanni Battista to his sons Alberto and Piero, from Leopoldo Pirelli, the third generation, to the shareholders and to today's managers. Leopoldo himself is an exemplary witness. A true entrepreneur, with eyes attentive to people and values, interpreter of that open soul of the innovative, cultured, modern and international Milanese bourgeoisie that still today marks the characteristics of a large European metropolis. A style that still pervades Pirelli even after the shareholding changes with the arrival of the Chinese partner of Chem China.
