The authorization to transport CO2 is the first example of infrastructure project cross-border between England and Wales. The green light concludes a process that lasted 18 months. Now it has arrived in the form of a Development Consent Order (DCO), a very strategic tool.

The programs

At the end of January Eni completed the acquisition of Neptune Energy, an operation which strengthens its position by granting it access to three further storage licenses for a total capacity of approximately 1GT in the United Kingdom. The system is growing in several countries where it is a question of making useful elements that are harmful to health and the environment.

The latest authorization will see new pipelines built and existing infrastructure reused to transport carbon dioxide from capture plants in the North West of England and North Wales to natural gas fields. Empty deposits are the most suitable infrastructure for locking up everything captured. The hypotheses have been studied for years and Eni has experience of now empty gas wells. Carbon dioxide will come stored safely and permanent. The HyNet project will eventually have a capacity of 4,5 million tonnes of CO2 per year in the first phase, eventually reaching 10 million tonnes.
