From 1 April 2023, the price of electricity for families under the enhanced protection regime, still the majority of Italian families, will be reduced by 55%. The reference price for the typical family – with consumption of 2700 kmh per year and meter with 3 kW power – drops to 23,75 euro cents per kilowatt hour, taxes included. This was established by Arera which decided on electricity prices for the second quarter of 2023. The decision on gas will be made next Tuesday but the expectation is for a further drop of around 20%. The drop in prices is due to the sharp drop in gas prices, which produce a large part of the electricity we consume, but has not yet brought the cost of the kilowatt hour back to pre-war Ukraine-Russia levels. According to Assoutenti's calculations, "the new tariffs that will take effect in April are still 14% higher than those in force in the second quarter of 2021, and involve higher expenditure for families on the protected market equal to 79 euros per year compared to the same period of two years ago”.
Electricity bills: prices collapse from April to June
The Arera has launched the new tariffs taking into account the decree on electricity and gas bills just launched by the government. Confirmed i social bonuses for families with ISEE level up to 15.000 euros. For large families, with at least 4 dependent children, the ISEE level rises from 20 to 30 euros. Arera recalls that the energy social bonuses in support of families "are paid directly in the bill to all eligible families" and that the ISEE "is valid for the calendar year and it is therefore important to resubmit the Single Substitute Declaration (DSU ) to obtain certification for 2023”.
The other novelty linked to the government decree is that the Arera has canceled the general system charges also for the next quarter for all gas customers, but the charges are reactivated for all electricity customers, including domestic users and will weigh around 82 euros per bill, according to Assoutenti. Also for gas, the reduction in VAT from 10 to 5 per cent is confirmed and the negative tariff component Ug2023, introduced in April last year by the Authority and applied to consumption up to 2 smc (standard cubic metres) per year. A special measure that has made it possible to counteract the peak in gas prices for families and small users”, communicates Arera.
Electricity bills: annual expense 1.267 euros
For the electricity bill, spending for the typical family in the rolling year (between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023) it will be around 1.267 euros, 33,7% more than in the previous period. The Arera indicates this by explaining that the growth in wholesale prices in the last 12 months and their continued high levels (albeit decreasing) is still reflected in the overall expenditure for the electricity bill.
