Not only parmesan e Ham. The complete list of products on which the US is about to increase duties by 25% is really long. Many other types of cheese are also included in the list (Grana Padano, pecorino cheese, provolone) and meat (practically all cuts of pig), but also many varieties of fish (mussels e clams), fruit (cherries, peaches, pears) and citrus (lemons, oranges e tangerines). Luckily for Italy, the new American tariffs against the EU – which are worth a total of 7,5 billion dollars and will go into effect on October 18 – they will not affect olive oil, pasta and wine (the most exported Italian product to the United States). Prosecco, very popular in the USA, is therefore saved. But the bill for our country is still salty.
According to Coldiretti, for Made in Italy agri-food exports the blow will come from half a billion euros a year. The greatest economic damage will come fromexport of Parmigiano Reggiano and Grana Padano, which in 2018 made Italian companies collect 150 million euro and this year they were doing even better (+26% in the first half). On these two specialties the duties will almost triple, passing by 15 to 40%. The exports of pecorino cheese, which yielded 65 million euros last year and grew by 2019% in the first part of 29.
From the new list of the US Department of Commerce (USTR), soon to be published in the Federal Register, we have selected all the products that (also) concern Italian exports. Here is the complete list.
