David LaChapelle is a photographer from the United States, born in Fairfield, Connecticut on March 11, 1963, the son of a single mother. He became unhappy at home and at age 15 ran away to New York City. Here, he got a job at Studio 54 as a busboy, but his father wanted to take him away from that lifestyle and ended up enrolling him in the School of Art in North Carolina.
His first known photograph was a study of his mother, taken in Puerto Rico during a family vacation. LaChapelle quickly recognized the potential of photography for himself, and soon decided to return to New York, settling in 1980.
By the mid-90s, LaChapelle was sufficiently well known that there were requests for collections of his images. He published LaChapelle Land in 1996, and many others. Meanwhile, he diversified from a pure focus on photography to start making films as well.
He has directed films with the likes of Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey. In addition to his film work, LaChapelle has also been involved in stage production.
