One year after the agreement between Hera Group ed Elior to promote the circular economy, environmental sustainability and sustainable mobility the first data arrives of the project relating to biomethane production.
The Hera-Elior project
The project is based on valorisation of organic wasteexcluding food waste. The waste from the kitchens of some of Elior's catering outlets is sent to the Hera Group plant in Sant'Agata Bolognese, where it is transformed into biomethane and compost. This biomethane is then used to fuel public and private transport or for domestic uses such as cooking and heating.
Il Biomethane is a renewable gas 100% and has lower environmental impacts than fossil fuels. Furthermore, the process also produces high quality compost, which can be used in agriculture or for gardening purposes. This project closes a virtuous circle, transforming kitchen waste into precious resources for the local area and the environment.
In one year you avoid 80 tons of carbon dioxide
Elior's contribution to the production of biomethane was calculated by monitoring the collection of organic waste in 20 catering outlets, 19 in the province of Bologna and one in the province of Modena. Overall, they have been collected 512 tons of organic waste in one year and intended for the production of biofuel. This made it possible to obtain almost 41.000 cubic meters of biomethane, equivalent to 33 tons of oil saved and one reduction of 80 tons of carbon dioxide compared to fossil fuels.
The biofuel produced would be sufficient to travel over 570.000 kilometres, corresponding to the annual consumption of 29 medium-sized cars.
The environmental advantage of the project, in terms of carbon dioxide savings (80 tons of greenhouse gases less), corresponds to the carbon dioxide absorbed by about 800 trees in one year.
