Brazil in full institutional chaos

Institutional pirouette of the interim president of the Brazilian Chamber, Waldir Maranhao, who first canceled the vote on the impeachment procedure of President Dilma Rousseff, then sent a letter to the president of the Senate, Renan Calheiros, informing him that he had reversed the decision. We therefore continue within the established times: on Wednesday the vote in the Senate for the impeachment.

Maranhao gave in to the leaders of his People's Party (PP, right-wing), who had threatened to expel him if he hindered the impeachment of the left-wing president.

Previously, the president of the Brazilian Senate, Renan Calheiros, had decided to confirm the vote on the impeachment of Rousseff. At the end of an emergency meeting in Brasilia, Calheiros had decided to ignore the choice of the interim speaker of the Chamber. This dissent would have opened an unprecedented institutional conflict between the two branches of the Brazilian Parliament, but then came the about-face of Maranhao.
