The images of the year are those of the tragedy of migrants in the Mediterranean. It is established by the prize Pulitzer, now in its XNUMXth edition: the prize for photography was awarded, in fact, to New York Times e Reuters, thanks to the images of the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean.
For the NYT, the winners in the Breaking News Photography category were Daniel Etter, Sergey Ponomarev, Mauricio Lima and Tyler Hicks with their story in images of the journey made with a family of refugees from Greece to Sweden, while the prize in Reuters was assigned to the entire photographic staff of the agency thanks to the images of the landings of migrants on the Greek coast.
The Associated Press was awarded thanks to a maxi-reportage on slave workers in Thailand's fish industry, which led to a series of trials and reforms, restoring freedom to over two thousand people who had been forced to work in captivity. The Washington Post, on the other hand, was rewarded for its own database about police killings.
The award for the investigative journalism went to the Tampa Bay Times and the Sarasota Herald Tribune, thanks to the investigation by Leonora LaPeter Anton, Anthony Cormier and Michael Braga on violence and neglect in psychiatric hospitals in Florida, while recognition for a work “narrative” was awarded to the novel “The Sympathizer” by Viet Thanh Nguyen, a novel with a Vietnamese-American setting, which has not yet been translated into Italian. The recognition for the "history" section went instead to the book by TJ Stiles “Custer's Trials: A Life on the Frontier of a New America”. For breaking news, the staff of the Los Angeles Times was awarded for coverage of the San Bernardino massacre and the investigation that followed.
The Pulitzer for the was won, however, by the Hip Hop musical "Hamilton" by Lin Manuela Miranda, inspired by the biography of US Treasury Prime Minister Alexander Hamilton.
