Industry, Istat: leap forward in May

Production recorded an increase of 0,7% compared to April and 2,8% on an annual basis. The growth of the first 5 months

Italian industry continues on its way up. According to the latest data released by Istat, on average for the first five months of 2017, production increased by 1,7% compared to the same period last year.

Only in May did production increase by 0,7% compared to April and by 2,8% on an annual basis (data corrected for calendar effects), but in the March-May quarter the increase was only 0,2, XNUMX% compared to the December-February period.

Again in May, the seasonally adjusted monthly index recorded positive cyclical changes in the sectors of capital goods (+2,3%) and consumer goods (+0,2%). On the other hand, negative changes were recorded for energy (-1,0%) and intermediate goods (-0,4%).

In trend terms, the indices adjusted for calendar effects recorded positive changes in all sectors in May 2017: capital goods increased significantly (+5,9%) and, to a lesser extent, consumer goods (+2,5 .1,0%), energy (+0,4%) and intermediate goods (+XNUMX%).

As regards the sectors of economic activity, in May 2017 the sectors that recorded the greatest trend growth are those of the manufacture of means of transport (+7,3%), of the other manufacturing industries, repair and installation of machines and equipment (+ 6,7%) and the manufacture of machinery and equipment nec (+5,0%).

The greatest drops were recorded in the sectors of mining (-18,8%), the manufacture of electrical equipment and non-electrical household appliances (-5,0%) and the wood, paper and printing industry (- 0,6%).
