Thinking about the more than 700 million people in the world who suffer from hunger means imagining a economic model global overturned. Completely overturned, because the injustices that need to be remedied affect the right to life. There are hundreds of appeals today - World Food Day - to put agriculture and the right to food back at the center of global strategies. According to the FAO, they are 733 million human beings fighting against hunger and famine. There are fixed points, however. Global inequalities are the result of human actions and climatic phenomena that paradoxically in both cases can - or rather, must - be governed. Wars, economic crises, bullying, add to climate change, to sudden devastation at a frantic pace. And every day the ruling classes are burdened by the question of what to do?
Right to life
The theme of this year's day is "Right to food for a better life and future”. Investments in new technologies for agricultural production, the redistribution of crops in a less unbalanced way, are the most appropriate answers, but at the same time the most complicated. How ready are the multinational food companies to change the paradigm of profit, competition, and food trade only for those who can? Instead, we need to learn to produce enough and quality food, while preserving natural resources and soil health, says Confagricoltura. The EU has several programs that aim to change the system, not overturn it. Before approving them, there were fierce clashes, all to defend profitable positions. In China, the issue of the right to food is overshadowed by financial and hi-tech enterprise. In the US, the most conservative states are on the opposite side to the methods of sustainable agriculture, ready to resume positions and business with Donald Trump. Yet, agriculture, still considered a primary economic sector, will have to feed 2050 10 billion people. Already on World Day today the numbers don't add up, the future is more fiscal. Is there waste in our homes and in production chains? Yes and the days solemnly declared against it food waste are the black spot of a world that generates disappointments, anger as well as being threatened by the climate. The FAO is a garrison and a political outpost against the human and environmental disorder that kills people. The intentions for a mobilization and an awareness are central in a fragmented, mortifying scenario, where fortunately secular and charity missions for the poor meet. After today other issues arrive and the new world order to feed the poorest is evidently still all to be imagined.
