FiberCop is strengthening its presence in Southern Italy with a hub dedicated to network innovation, working with universities, businesses, and research centers. From Naples to Palermo, the project focuses on technologies for the evolution of Italy's digital infrastructure.

A Digital Twin to design and manage increasingly intelligent networks

The last piece of the path takes shape in Naples, in collaboration with theUniversity of Naples Federico II for the development of architectures, models and platforms based on the Multi-domain Digital TwinThe goal is to create a dynamic digital representation of increasingly complex and interconnected infrastructures, integrating fiber optic networks, cloud and Edge Cloud, 5G and future 6G mobile networks, quantum communication systems, and cybersecurity components.

Digital Twins were at the centre of FiberCop's plenary report at the MNC International Congress 2026, organized by the IEEE and the Federico II University of Naples last July and dedicated to measurements on telecommunications systems. Thanks to artificial intelligence, simulation, and automated orchestration, they will be able to predict infrastructure behavior, optimize resource use, automate network operations, and accelerate the development of new digital services. The collaboration with Federico II also includes the drafting of proposals for national and international technical standards for the use of Digital Twins in the design and management of telecommunications networks.

The collaboration is part of FiberCop's strategy to extend theInnovation Hub in Southern Italy and create a distributed ecosystem where universities, research centers, businesses, and digital infrastructures can work together to test technologies for the next generation of networks. This process also includes Q-Sud and SUNS, two national research and innovation programs that enable the transfer of expertise and results developed within the PNRR's major strategic partnerships to industrial applications.

From quantum computing to cybersecurity

Q-Sud was born from the integration of skills and infrastructures developed by national partnerships Nqsti, ICSC e Restart, with the aim of building an ecosystem dedicated to quantum computing and communications in Southern Italy. FiberCop contributes to the development of solutions for the integrated orchestration of traditional and quantum networks, combining digital twins, artificial intelligence, and automation for the predictive control of distributed infrastructures across terrestrial networks, cloud systems, and quantum computing environments.

In parallel, FiberCop is involved in Suns – Secure Ubiquitous Networks and Services, An initiative coordinated by the Serics and Restart Foundations and dedicated to the development and testing of technologies developed in the PNRR partnerships on cybersecurity and advanced telecommunications. The program covers, among other areas, 5G and 6G networks, Edge Cloud infrastructure, the industrial Internet of Things, digital resilience, and critical infrastructure security. Within SUNS, FiberCop is promoting the creation of an experimental cluster of Network Edge Cloud in Southern Italy, intended to host research, validation, and experimentation activities in cybersecurity, Network Digital Twin, intelligent orchestration, and AI-native applications.

Naples and Palermo

FiberCop's strategy for Southern Italy aims to build a network of interconnected skills and infrastructure. Completing the package will be the soon-to-be-opened Edge Cloud site in Palermo, which will become a demonstration and advanced testing hub for next-generation digital architecture.

Naples and Palermo They thus represent two nodes in FiberCop's journey in Southern Italy, in which university research, industrial experimentation, and technological infrastructure contribute to the development of Italian networks.
