Il Maltempo is hitting much of the Northern and Central Italy. A disturbed system of Atlantic origin is reaching our country, causing an intense worsening with heavy and persistent rainfall over much of the central-northern regions, accompanied by a general strengthening of winds from the southern quadrants.
Based on available forecasts, the Department of Civil protection in agreement with the regions involved – which are responsible for activating civil protection systems in the territories concerned – has issued a warning of adverse weather conditions.
Weather, bad weather throughout Central-Northern Italy
The warning foresees widespread and persistent precipitation, including showers or thunderstorms on Liguria and upper Tuscany, Eastern Piedmont, Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and subsequently to Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano, Veneto, Friuli Venezia Giulia and the rest of Tuscany. Furthermore, from late morning/early afternoon today, Tuesday 8 October, widespread rainfall is expected, including showers or thunderstorms, to Umbria, Lazio and subsequently, especially in the western sectors, to Abruzzo and Molise. The phenomena will be accompanied by heavy showers, frequent electrical activity, local hailstorms and strong gusts of wind. From early morning, thunderstorms are also expected strong to gale-force winds, from the southern quadrants, on Emilia-Romagna, especially the Apennine areas and Liguria, extending to Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, especially the coastal areas. Storm surges along exposed coasts.
Civil Protection, red alert for Liguria and Lombardy
“Based on the current and forecast phenomena”, the Civil Protection has assessed for today, “red alert for hydrogeological risk in areas of Liguria and Lombardy. Also assessed orange alert throughout Lazio and in areas of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto, Lombardy, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany. Yellow alert in thirteen regions”.
Critical situation in Genoa, schools closed
Heavy rainfall hit the area during the night Genoa, causing the alert to be raised from yellow to orange as of yesterday evening, which will become red starting from 12pm today. The Fegino river in Val Polcevera has overflowed, several floods in various areas of the Ligurian capital. The Municipal Operations Centre met at 4 this morning and, given the response on the ground to the rainfall and considering the forecasts of worsening of the storm front, indicated the need to close schools of all levels throughout the municipal territory.
“What will cross Liguria in the next few hours is a very significant disturbed passage with the possibility of so-called self-regenerating storms, strong and persistent due to the convergence of warm winds from the southern quadrants with cold winds from the north. The situation is serious and potentially dangerous. Great caution and attention are needed”, explained the regional councilor for Civil Protection Giacomo Raul Giampedrone.
